Position Description


The successful candidate will work as part of a team to provide interdisciplinary GIS support including analysis and development for NASA environmental, facilities, emergency management, safety, economic development, and other agency functions.


The Scientist II operates with a degree of independence under established policies and procedures. Normally receives sufficient guidance from department lead, Scientist IV and/or Scientist III to assure coordination of efforts with other personnel working on related phases of the program. Maintains infrequent technical correspondence with customers, their representatives, and contact with other NASA GIS personnel.

Major Duties:

Works under the direction of the GIS Lead and Program Manager and in direct support of the Center Operation’s Environmental Office at John C. Stennis Space Center. Independently performs project assignments and is responsible to the GIS Lead. Reports activity to the GIS Lead on a weekly basis as part of contract reporting requirements.

Supports environmental compliance document development and projects covering Environmental Justice, CERCLA Modeling, Wetland Mitigation, Wildlife Mapping/Studies, Invasive Species, and Spill Prevention.

Develops applications, documents, and maps to support Facility Master Planning, Site Selection, and Interior Facility Management.

Performs data development, data conversion, 3D modeling, advanced spatial analysis, and development of high quality cartographic products.

Develops workflows to perform recurring tasks and automates workflows using ModelBuilder or Python Scripting.

Maintains geographic information systems data to ensure system integrity. Conducts minimal field investigations and surveys.

Provides preliminary technical support for Esri software to NASA GIS Users.

Assists with development of intranet-based GIS applications including design, modification, maintenance, and documentation.

Utilizes critical thinking skills and problem solving to resolve issues and devise new techniques and projects helpful to the agency.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Systems, Environmental Sciences or Remote Sensing from an accredited college or university, and at least four years experience, or an Associate degree in a relevant discipline with six or more years of direct experience required with demonstrated ability.

Requires proficiency with ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS for Server, ArcSDE, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Requires experience in database management, cartographic design, spatial analysis, data analysis, database integration, GPS collection, application development, web service development/administration, and RDBMS administration.

GIS web mapping application development experience with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript and/or ArcGIS API for Flex preferred. Experience with Python scripting and ModelBuilder a strong plus.

Must be able to effectively use verbal and written communication skills, prepare reports, presentations, and proposals, and interface comfortably with internal and external customers.

Requires excellent customer service skills and a high degree of professionalism.

Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Requires fine motor skills and visual acuity.
